Vision & Mission

1) One of the most important objectives of the Manipuri department is to provide quality education related to language and literature to the students.

2) Introducing the Manipuri language, literature and cultural heritage to the students of this region, further to promote Manipuri language and literature academically.

3) Highlighting the relationship between Manipuri language and literature of other languages of India. Especially the relationship of Manipuri literature with other major Indian languages like Bengali, Assamese and Hindi etc.

4) Scientific analysis of Manipuri Folklore and Folk culture as a part of the syllabus.

Best Practices

1) Although Manipuri is known as a language and literature department, special attention is paid to teaching and learning in folk culture and translation studies. Through this, Manipuri department tries to explain to the students the close relationship between literature and other disciplines or subjects.

2) Manipuri belongs to the Tibetan Burmese or Sino-Tibetan language family in terms of linguistic family which is completely different from Indo-Aryan languages in terms of pronunciations, grammar and alphabet. In an effort to bridge this natural linguistic gap, the Manipuri Department's initiative helps students and faculty members of other languages who wish to learn Manipuri. But the departmental initiative is completely informal. If anyone wants to know Manipuri language, we try to teach him.

Weaknesses

Since the college is situated at the Bengali speaking majority area, hence the number of enrolment of students in the subject is comparatively low to other subjects, Due to this reason there is only one post of Assistant Professor has been sanctioned by the government. It becomes quite difficult for a single teacher to teach the students & complete the syllabus of MIL Manipuri and Elective Manipuri subjects in TDC (CBCS) Course.

Strength & Opportunities

Students passing from the Assam University approved Three Years Degree Course (TDC) on Manipuri subject, have the scope to pursue Post Graduation (MA) in Manipuri subject in different universities of India and there are also opportunities for research on Manipuri language, literature and folklore. There is also the opportunity to establish own self as a translator. At present Manipuri translators are being offered the opportunity to work in public and private organizations. In addition, one have the opportunity to work as a Manipuri language subject teacher in schools and colleges.
